Derek Sterling

Race: Caucasoid Homo sapiens sapiens
Professional Rating: 3
Threat Rating: 4

The Crescent International Director of Security Operations. Derek Sterling is in command of Crescent International's consolidated security forces. Though he tends to establish a bureaucracy, relegating much of the lower level management to sub-directors, he handles the more elite security staff as directly as possible and is known to have been the participated directly in strategic resource adjustment (a.k.a. "posed as a Johnson") on more than one occasion. He has a shady past and is rumored to have had a violent background. Of the many rumors surrounding his past, the two primary stories point to him as either a shadowrunner or a government special forces agent. Sterling reports directly to Karl Erikson, who has given Sterling a great deal of leeway in managing the security assets of the corporation.  Whenever possible, Sterling tries to acquire as much budget surplus as he can for training exercises and new equipment, noting that "a few thousand nuyen in training and equipment per operative can save several hundreds of thousands of nuyen in employee compensation to the families."  Due to this mentality, Sterling has been steadily increasing the quality of the corporation's security forces, placing them on par with the Big Eight and perhaps soon to be able to be quoted as boasting the best trained security personnel in the world.

{The mostly unknown truth is this: Sterling was a member of an elite UCAS government strike team involved in several "hush-hush" projects to "keep down corporate aggressors." This strike team, referred to as "the Dragoons," was involved in several key assassinations, sabotage, and a pivotal operation which silenced a secessionist movement in Seattle. Project Dragoon met an untimely end in 2039 however, when someone tipped off the management of an Ares Macrotechnology facility, which was in turn prepared for the team's attack. Only Sterling survived, though he fled to Denver, covering his tracks as best he could.  Though it may have been wiser to return to the FBI, Sterling felt compelled to run the shadows.  In his mind, it would be easier to strike back at Ares from the streets than from FDC.  Although with the FBI he would have had universal UCAS jurisdiction and nearly unlimited resources, the likelihood of being reassigned to the field would not have been very likely.  So rather than become an instructor at Quantico or a coordinator for a second generation Dragoons program he ran the Denver shadows for two years before being "transplanted" to Seattle.  There he ran for three more years, developing a local reputation as caustic, vindictive, "goal oriented," and extremely effective. Then, in 2045, at the age of 32, Sterling had a change of heart.  When the opportunity arose to become the director of Crescent International's security operations, he jumped on it.  Supplanting Ms. Aleecia Coleman, he redesigned his efforts toward exacting his revenge upon Ares.}

Gear Notes
When encountered, expect him to be well-dressed and packing concealed but serious heat. The typical Sterling encounter will usually fall into two categories: up-scale or down & dirty.

Up-scale simply means he's more or less dressed up. Either he's meeting the runners someplace nice for a "chat" or he's at the head of several "well-dressed words," who happen to spell TROUBLE. Expect "up-scale" Sterling to be carrying/wearing:

Vashon Island "Houndstooth" suit jacket & vest and pants (3/2)
Mortimer of London "Greatcoat" (4/2)
Concealable Holster holding
a customized Colt Manhunter with an internal Smartgun Link

Down & dirty Sterling means that he's expecting trouble and has subsequently prepared himself for it. Expect this "version" of Sterling to be well-armed and accompanied by additional security personnel. Sterling is likely to be armed like this if he's received a tip-off that someone is breaking into a warehouse or an R&D facility and he wants to supervise the action. Expect "down & dirty" Sterling to be carrying/wearing:

SecureTech Ultra-Vest (3/2)
SecureTech Long Coat (4/2)
Concealable Holster holding a customized Colt Manhunter with an internal Smartgun Link
and a Colt M-23 Assault Rifle with an external Smartgun Link
probably with a Flash Grenade as well
