Creating New Meta-Types in Shadowrun
I've never exactly been one to totally stand by the sourcebooks. They cramp my style and are generally a pain in the ass. At any rate, I keep looking through all this nonsense about "Other" in all the population figures of all those "Facts At A Glance." It started to get me irritated, as I keep saying to myself, "What the hell is OTHER?" I'm thinking maybe they're shapeshifters, but apparently they're not recognized with metahuman status (according to the official FASA party-line). Then this Beyond the Shadows -- Shadowrun Companion book came out with a few extras and I'm still thinking ... "That's good ... but not great." What if I wanted something REALLY outrageous, you know? Some kind of stone covered dude or something. Well, I got to thinking and I came up with the following rough guidelines for creating new meta-types...
1. Determine race rating. Roll 1D6-1, this number becomes the race rating and the number of cumulative race points above zero the race may have.
1D6-1 = Rating
2. Determine physical attribute modifications. It is +1 race points per +1 attribute modification and -1 race points per -1 attribute modification.
+1 race
points per +1 to any Physical Attribute
-1 race
points per -1 to any Physical Attribute
3. Determine mental attribute modifications. It is +2 race points per +1 attribute modification and -2 race points per -1 attribute modification.
+2 race
points per +1 to any Mental Attribute
-2 race
points per -1 to any Mental Attribute
4. Determine special attribute modifications.
+4 race points
per +1 to Reaction
-3 race
points per -1 to Reaction
+6 race
points per +1D6 to Initiative
+5 race
points per +1 to Essence
-4 race
points per -1 to Essence
+8 race
points per +1 to Magic
-4 race
points per -1 to Magic
5. Determine special abilities and characterisitcs.
+1 race
points per Sensory Enhancement
-1 race
points per Sensory Detractment
+2 race
points per "Special Power" (i.e. +1 Reach)
6. Determine racial allergies and/or vulnerabilities.
-1 race
points per Allergy level
-2 race
points per Vulnerability
7. Determine possible drain levels of any special abilities.
8. Double check cumulative race points to determine whether or not they exceed the racial rating.
9. Name the race and determine its final statistics.
