Myelophilein

Developed by Q-Lab Pharmatechnologies
for the UCAS military, Myelophilein saturates the nervous system with a host
of proteins that are readily converted by glial cells into myelin sheathing
for neuronal axons. By increasing the level of myelin sheathing in the nervous
system, Myelophilein effectively speeds up information transfer rates throughout
the biosystem, allowing for drastically improved reaction times.
>>>>>[Myelophilein:
The 103rd way to make a man move faster...]<<<<< >>>>>[And
fraught w/ problems and side-effects. If you check the official registry
on this thing the warnings go on for what seems like forever. Sure, there's
no evidence for dependency but who wants to take anything that's going
to ultimately cause them to develop MS? Is a slightly improved reaction
time worth THAT?]<<<<< >>>>>[Well,
you don't develop MS... You develop "symptoms which mimic MS"
... & only after you've been taking it for like a year or something
like that. (Yeah, we're talking some serious long-term dosage here...)
The recommendation on this is that IF YOU CAN GET IT, jab a little bit
into your thigh right before game time. You get the complete-and-total-awareness
feeling that smacks of chloralectamine but w/o the jittery side effects.]<<<<< >>>>>[What
about the crash though?]<<<<< >>>>>[Only
if you've been dicking around w/ it for weeks on end. See, the body totally
metabolizes everything in Myelophilein. If you've been using it for weeks
though, the neurons temporarily "forget" how to properly myelinate
themselves. The rest is logic.]<<<<< >>>>>[That's
nice... But does it help w/ decking!?]<<<<< >>>>>[Yes.
And the only "dietary supplement" I'll use anymore.]<<<<< |

Myelophilein is administered intravenously in solution with phosphate buffered saline (PBS). 1 gram is dissolved into 250 milliliters of PBS in combination with 5 grams of an associated protein compound. The protein compound can either be purchased with Myelophilein (for 25¥/gram) or can be extracted from common "dietary supplements" marketed toward athletes. 500 gram containers of protein rich dietary supplements are available for 30¥. Extracting the protein compounds from the mixture requires a Physical Science (8) Test or a Physical Science (Chemistry) (5) Test. Of each 500 gram container, approximately 200 grams of protein compounds can be extracted. (Quite a bargain, when you get down to it.)
Approximately 2 hours after intravenous administration, the recipient of the Myelophilein should begin to feel more alert and will receive +1 Reaction for the next 12 hours. Chronic administration (e.g., administration of a normal dosage every 12 hours) will result in a multiplicative effect over a period of days; after 4 days of chronic administration, the user receives +2 Reaction and after 16 days, the user receives +4 Reaction.
Using Myelophilein for periods in excess of 60 days will result in some demyelination. After 60 days, the user will receive a permanent -1 Reaction to their unaugmented attribute. After a second cycle of 60 days, the user will receive a permanent -2 Reaction to their unaugmented attribute (for a total of -3). Should the user persist in using Myelophilein or break the 60 day rule again, demyelination will continue and they will develop symptoms which mimic multiple sclerosis.
Termination of chronic administration will result in a total loss of increased Reaction combined with a "crash" after the drug's usual 12 hour active period. The "crash" delivers an unavoidable Serious Stun wound.
If the user has previously received any ogliodendrocyte/Schwann cell stimulating genetic treatments, he is immune from the demyelinating symptoms described above. However, such a user must receive chronic administration of Myelophilein for 16 days before receiving only a +1 Reaction; continued chronic administration will result in a +2 Reaction, but only after another 32 days.
